MISSION & HISTORY

Leadership Public Schools (LPS) is a network of three Bay Area charter high schools committed to putting students at the center of learning. Our mission is to create inclusive, empowering, and college-preparatory experiences that equip students to succeed in college, career, and as leaders in their communities.

We Believe Learning Should Be:

Responsive to student needs and rooted in inquiry

Differentiated through personalized, data-informed instruction

Asset-based, honoring each student's identity and strengths

The LPS Graduate Profile

Empowered. Informed. Ready to Lead.

At LPS, graduation is more than a milestone—it’s the launchpad for a life of purpose. Our Graduate Profile defines what every LPS student should know, be, and do by the time they walk across the stage.

They have a strong sense of identity and pride. With support from the LPS community, they recognize systemic challenges and advocate for themselves and others.

Leverage Knowledge

The LPS vision is that all students enter adulthood with pride in themselves, a commitment to social justice, a plan for success in college and career, and the perseverance to see it through.

Think Critically

They analyze problems, understand diverse perspectives, and stay grounded in social awareness and global context.

Go Proudly

They persevere. Whether pursuing college, career, or leadership roles, they move forward with purpose, pride, and vision.

Take Action

They lead with confidence, use their voice, and shape the future through self-directed learning and community impact.

Learn More About Our College & Career Pathways

Our pathways empower students to turn their passions into paychecks and their dreams into careers. We offer industry-linked programs, real-world experience, and expert guidance – all designed to launch students toward college, trade, or tech success.

Our Story

Founded in 2002, LPS began with a bold vision: provide a high-quality, college-prep education in underserved communities and empower students to return as changemakers.

By 2008, under the leadership of Dr. Louise Bay Waters, LPS built strong systems for assessment, data use, and technology—laying the foundation for long-term success. We launched a 1:1 laptop program, pioneered digital tools like ExitTicket, a student response system, and deepened our commitment to student support through restorative practices and dual enrollment.

Today, LPS is recognized as a leader in both innovation and impact, earning honors from U.S. News & World Report, Hewlett Foundation, Innovate Public Schools, and others. We continue to grow by staying grounded in what matters most: students.
